Adaptation

Dictators raise monuments pursuant to decrees. In democratic societies, those in power negotiate with the society – competition procedures are designed, the media engaging in heated polemics. The very concept of remembrance has to be accepted by various social groups, often as not antagonistic. The topic of remembrance itself is occasionally questioned for political reasons. The very form of the monument faces somewhat tedious requirements. A monument is to be lofty and communicative, symbolising traditional values in an innovative way while conforming to aspirations of artists and preferences of the masses alike. Matter itself ties in with certain conditions as well: rock resilience, wind force, and existent buildings and facilities all have to be accounted for. Often as not, the concept loses its initial drive, occasionally leaving the most interesting artistically projects undeveloped.
